Steelpan History

Winston Spree Simon was born in 1930. From as early as 1937 he was involved with a group of boys making music on the street for Carnival, Emancipation Day and all celebrations. By the age of 9 he was lead drummer.

Winston 'Spree' SimonIn 1946, Winston 'Spree' Simon developed a 14 note steel pan that caused a sensation when he played it during the first Carnival held in Trinidad after the celebration was banned at the beginning of World War II.

The instrument was quickly copied by other musicians, and Trinidad’s rhythm drum bands soon evolved into music bands.
